Oscars 2010

March 8th, 2010

The Academy Awards-the biggest night in Hollywood. Oscar winner Sandra Bullock looked quite beautiful wearing red lips, as did Charlize Theron. I also quite liked Zoe Saldana’s overall look. Her dress was very dramatic which worked well with her smoky eyes. What I like about Diane Kruger is that she always switches up her make up look. Last night she wore neutral eye make up with cool pink lips which nicely enhances her features. With some debate as to who had the best dress (For me Miley Cyrus and for Lisa Rachel McAdams) we both agreed Demi Moore looked lovely in Atelier Versace.

Lady Gaga and Cyndi Lauper at MAC Viva Glam Launch

March 3rd, 2010

Lady Gaga and Cyndi Lauper are out and about a lot lately as they promote their MAC Viva Glam Lipsticks. Both ladies have their own shade, Gaga’s is a cool pink and Cyndi’s is a coral red which I wear and love. These two make a brilliantly outrageous couple and draw attention to an in important cause.

Mary Kate and Ashley Olsen

February 23rd, 2010

London has been the place to be for the past few days. The BAFTA’s, Elle Style Awards, and London Fashion Week have meant an influx of American celebrities. My favourite twins we’re seen at a BAFTA event as well as at the Style Awards looking fashion forward as usual. Their huge blue eyes always stand out whether they’re wearing smoky eyes as seen on the left or neutral shadows like the picture on the right. What I always admire about these two is that they look effortlessly put together.

Megan Fox on W Magazine

February 16th, 2010

Megan Fox looking more fresh faced fashion than sexpot on the cover of W for March. There is no doubt that Megan was blessed with outstanding features. Everything from her arched brows, almond shaped eyes, high cheekbones, and full lips is picture perfect. When you look like this you can pretty much throw any make up at her- a little or a lot, and it’s safe to say she’ll look gorgeous. Can’t wait to see what the rest of the spread looks like.

The 2010 Grammys

February 1st, 2010

The Grammys last night were a star studded event. So many fantastic moments on the red carpet, and on stage. We narrowed it down to five of the overall best. The one shoulder, feather dress worn by Lea Michele was adorable on her. She’s really turning into quite the red carpet show stopper. The low key, fresh faced look Ciara chose showed off her naturally pretty features. The glossy nude lip and sleek ponytail really worked. Always with the golden glow, smoky eyes, and nude lips-Jennifer Lopez. It must be said that she made our list based on her make up and hair, not the dress. Her dress was a mistake. Katy Perry was gorgeous in her backless number. The bright pink lip was an excellent choice. Beyonce looked stunning as usual. Loved the gold Armani Prive dress, and the blonde hair just looks so lovely with her skin tone. I also enjoyed her structured eye make up that enhanced he almond eyes. Plus she set a record by taking home 6 Grammys! A pretty spectacular evening for Mrs. Beyonce Knowles-Carter.

The 2010 SAG Awards

January 25th, 2010

Awards season continued on this weekend with the Screen Actors Guild Awards. Here are some of our best dressed girls of the evening: Diane Kruger looked stunning in gold floor length Jason Wu.  The red lip and subtle eye shadow was exactly the right combination. Lea Michele in emerald green Malandrino went for a matte nude lip with soft smoky eyes.  Drew Barrymore wearing Monique Lhuillier, looked retro with her bouffant blonde up do and pale glossy lips. Marion Cotillard-always the picture of Parisian sophistication wearing Elie Saab Couture, slicked hair and smoky eyes.

Who’s your favourite?

Golden Globes 2010

January 18th, 2010

Last night at the Golden Globes most celebrities seemed to opt for a fresh faced look. Light to medium toned lips were very popular with a few exceptions. Christina Hendricks showed off a bright red lip which was a huge contrast to her fair skin, but it made her eyes pop nicely. Zoe Saldana and Olivia Wilde’s soft smoky eyes weren’t overly dramatic. I like the elongated shape that created a cat eye look. Kate Hudson’s skin looked tan and glowy as always. Her tan skin worked really well with her blonde hair and white Marchesa dress. Lea Michelle has been working the red carpet all over the place this past week and looking lovely. With her naturally stand out features I liked her subtle eyes, and pale pink lips. Christina Aguilera looked so polished. I always like it when she takes a break from the fire engine red lips! Her eye make up was defined and blended with matte textured earth tones. A little shading under the cheekbones, and a natural looking lip. She looked so modern and beautiful. Christina was one of my favourite’s of the night.

Who did you think looked the best at the Golden Globes?

Blake Lively in Esquire Magazine

January 14th, 2010

Red lips, strong black liner, slicked back hair, and oiled up skin. These are often the requirements for girls in men’s magazines. Blake pulls the look off effortlessly as though she always looks like this (which she actually often does!) I especially enjoy the sheen on the skin. Johnson’s Baby Oil Gel gives the same effect to bare legs and arms a must have for the upcoming season.

The People’s Choice Awards

January 8th, 2010

2010 awards season has begun with the People’s Choice Awards. Though not the the most prestigious of award shows, it is probably the only one based solely on public opinion. I have to say my opinion was not that of the majority. I disagreed with most of the winners in almost every category, with the exception of Glee.

We love Glee at Smudge Style, and can’t wait for it to return to our screens on Wednesday evenings. Lea Michele really glammed it up for the occasion. Chiseled cheek bones, red stained lips, and smoldering eyes were in stark contrast to her character Rachel.

Other notables were Ginnifer Goodwin and her super sleek hair. Jessica Alba’s glowy skin. Favourite make up of the night was Nicole Scherzinger’s. The matte elongated smoky eye really set her apart in a sea of smoky eye wearing celebs. For her actual performance, there were tiny sparkly diamonds added to the top lash line-a nice touch I thought. The blondes of the evening were Carrie Underwood and Diane Kruger. Diane’s fuss free hair and neutral make were a great complement to her skin tight Herve Leger dress. Carrie Underwood always looks fresh and pretty, and Wednesday night was no exception.

Get the Look: Rihanna

December 21st, 2009

Rihanna

What always stands out to me about Rhianna is her honey coloured skin, and pretty light eyes. Both of these features were a focus in her make up, when she visited the Jonathan Ross show in the UK. Starting with the skin, I would use Nars Sparkling Loose Powder in Gold Rush. Apply anywhere skin is exposed to get a warm shimmery glow. To replicate the cool toned smoky eye, apply the darkest colour in the Armani Eyes to Kill Palette, on top of a cream base shadow to intensify the colour. Use a soft tapered blending brush to pull the shadow out towards the temple to create the elongated shape. Apply the light beige shadow as a highlight on the brow bone. False lashes are a must have to add more drama to the eyes. I like the Make Up Forever Nude Lash 158, they’re thick at the base of the lashes and give lots of length. No smoky eye is complete without the right lip. Rhianna’s bronze peach lip could be achieved with Michael Kors for Estee Lauder Lip Sheen in Honey Blonde.

Celebrities at Premieres

December 15th, 2009

Celebrity Premieres

Before the end of the year arrives a few big movies will hit the theatres just in time for the 2010 awards season. (Golden Globe nominations were this morning) Over the past week premieres and promotion have begun, where we’ve seen standard red carpet looks that work every time. Rachel McAdams and Gwen Stefani at the premiere of Sherlock Holmes, show off two different shades of red. Adding further evidence to the fact that, there is a red lipstick that works for everyone. Penelope Cruz at the Nine premiere, and Zoe Saldana at Avatar, left their hair down, and focused on dark smoky eyes and neutral and matte lips.

Taylor Swift on the Cover of T Magazine

December 9th, 2009

Taylor Swift in T magazine

Truth be told, I’m not a fan of Taylor Swift’s usual look. So when we saw these in T magazine I was pleasantly surprised. I think it’s the combination of bright blue eyeshadow and fire engine red lips that are just so eye catching. We know this might not be the go to look for most peoples day to day lives, but a toned down version could be pulled off under the right circumstances. Therefore we recommend the following key products: Anastasia Brow Gel for groomed brows that take a back seat to the overall look. The YSL Ombre 5 Lumieres in 5 Riviera is the perfect palette of blues. Applied with a soft brush you can achieve a less dramatic look. Recreate the crisp red lip with YSL Rouge Volupte Lipstick in Red Temptation. For sculpting the cheeks a matte blush works the best, try Revlon’s Barely Buff. Essie Nail Polish in Lollipop completes the look.

Victoria Beckham on UK Bazaar

December 1st, 2009

victoriabeckhamThe December issue of UK Bazaar has two covers both featuring a very glamorous looking Victoria Beckham. The black and white image has an updated 50’s feel to it with the sculpted brow and netting. While the colour image combines some of my favourite AW 09 trends-one shouldered dress, noir nails, sleek hair, and strong dark eyes. This is one more issue I have to add to my ever growing stack of mags.

Alicia Keys and Fergie at the AMAs

November 24th, 2009

American Music Awards

On Sunday night at the American Music Awards, both Alicia Keys and Fergie had some major red carpet style. They shared a designer in common, both wearing Armani Prive gowns but their makeup looks were completely different. Alicia, who often wears colourful make up matched her eyeshadow to her dress. This is not usually my favourite way to do make up. I think it worked this time because the blue didn’t over take her entire eye, and the black eyeliner and lashes kept it looking modern. Fergie’s voluminous hair made a bigger statement than her make up. She’s really low key with her make up these days often wearing neutral eyeshadow, and pale peach lips. I actually really liked the contrast between her understated make up, and the hard rock dress, anything else would have been just too much.

Charlize Theron for J’adore Dior

November 19th, 2009

Charlize Theron for J'adore Dior

It’s all about the skin, and not just your face. To recreate Charlize’s all over golden, glowing look we suggest:

1. Start by using a body scrub or exfoliator

2. Apply a rich moisturizer or try Neutrogena Body Oil and let dry

3. With a soft powder brush, dust MAC Mineralized Skin Finish in Gold Deposit down the arms, across the chest and collar bone, and down the shin bone. For more intense shine, you can mist the brush with water and then dip into the Skin Finish.

For a fabulous bronzed face, all you really need is a bronzing powder preferably with some luminosity. The Dior Face and Lip Palette above contains a bronzer and shimmer powder as well as a gold lip gloss to complete your sun-kissed look.

Nude Lips

November 12th, 2009

Nude Lip

The nude lip is always a hit on and off the red carpet. Personally I can’t live without MAC C-Thru Lipglass. I’ve been devoted to it since it launched about eight years ago. The perfect shade of peachy beige, it works on almost every skin tone from fair to dark. The thing to remember when choosing the perfect nude lip is to get the right undertone to match your skin. Olive skin looks good in beige, gold, and peach undertones. If your skin is more fair and has rosy undertones then pale pink nudes work very well. Use a lip liner to softly define your lips, and a little gloss to ensure that your lips don’t disappear but still stand out.

2009 MTV EMAs

November 6th, 2009

2009 MTV EMAs

The 2009 MTV Europe Music Awards brought out quite a few familiar faces. Katy Perry and Leona Lewis looked picture perfect on the red carpet. Both ladies played up their eyes by wearing stacks of lashes, always a wise choice for instant glamour. I also enjoy the white eyeliner in Leona’s water line it makes her eyes appear big and bright.

2009 Hollywood Awards

October 30th, 2009

2009 Hollywood Awards

In Hollywood it seems like another day, another awards show. Kate Beckinsale and Diane Kruger looked effortlessly beautiful at the 2009 Hollywood Awards. Both actresses opted for a red carpet stand by — neutral coloured eyes with a subtle shimmer, and natural pink lips.

Whitney Museum Gala

October 22nd, 2009

Whitney Museum Gala

The Whitney Museum Gala brought out some very well put together ladies the other night. All of whom were dressed in Versace. Donatella was the hostess for the evening, and saw to it that everyone looked fabulous. Alexa Chung and Chanel Iman let their dresses stand out and opted for low key make up. Where as Jennifer Hudson and Taylor Momsen let their smoky eyes be the centre of attention. Shakira’s bouffant hair and peach lips were the perfect combo. Loved Mischa’s healthy glow and glossy hair. Versace is synonymous with glamour and each of these women represented that in their own way.

Celebrity Campaigns

October 21st, 2009

celebcampaigns

In a society that rarely puts models on the cover of fashion magazines, it’s not a shock when we have two major design houses following suit by using celebrity faces. Madonna for Louis Vuitton, and Jennifer Connelly for Balenciaga, both who have been used before for these labels. the LV campaign has been criticised  for the heavy use of  photoshop. However I think what stands out besides Madonna, and what makes the images beautiful is the use of high dynamic range photography.

As for Jennifer Connelly, she maybe an actress now but she didn’t start off that way. She modelled during her youth, before she began her acting career. It’s easy to see why: her unique features can carry off the big make up and hair like a pro. In this case model or celebrity doesn’t really matter because both campaigns are flawless.
