Fall Makeup Essentials

August 17th, 2011

It’s time to update your makeup bag for the new season. The glossy bright lips, and pop coloured eye shadows can take the next few months off. This fall it’s all about the red lip, lined eyes, and spidery lashes. You’ll also want to invest in eye shadows in caramel and toffee shades, and of course a few sooty greys and blacks for the smokey eye. Finish your look with perfectly groomed brows, and flawless skin and you are set for A/W 11.

Alexa Chung

April 26th, 2011

Model, TV presenter, designer, “it-girl” Alexa Chung wears many hats. Recognized for her somewhat quirky yet cool style, and a permanent front row feature at the four fashion weeks. Despite this, what makes her so appealing is the non-chalent approach to her overall grooming that makes her somewhat intriguing. Not one to over do it with makeup, usually nothing more than a flick of liquid liner is the basis of her look, bare lips and tousled hair.

The Ladies of Mad Men

October 20th, 2010

The season finale of Mad Men may have been this week, but the perfectly put together, lady like style of the era is still going strong for Fall 2010. A cinched in waist and a structured handbag goes really well with natural matte skin, red lips and well groomed brows.

Liquid Eyeliner for Spring

June 24th, 2010

Liquid liner is a make up artist staple, and this Spring it showed up on the runway in a variety of forms. Dior kept it classic extending the line past the outer corner of the eye. The look at Cavalli was similar but the line is thicker and more exaggerated giving it a tougher look. Chalayan, Lagerfeld, and Oscar framed the eye by lining all the way around. I like liner on the top and bottom, it brings a lot of intensity to the eyes. Valentino’s liquid liner lids make the strongest statement, especially against an almost bare face.

How to: Winged Eyeliner

January 21st, 2010

Winged eyeliner is a classic make up trend. Here are some tips to perfect your look:

1. Hold the brush, keep your hand steady by resting it on your chin.

2. Look straight ahead into mirror tilt head back slightly rather than pulling your eye.

3. Start from outer corner of eye where upper and lower lash line meets and create a small flick.

4. Taper the line-it should be very thin from the inner corner and get thicker in the middle then thin again before the flick.

5. Depending on how thick you want the liner start thin and build on that for more control.

6. For a more modern look (see closed eye pic above) draw the liner straight and extend out from the outer corner rather than flicking up. An angled brush works best for this.

7. For very dramatic eyeliner (Amy Winehouse) mark out the lines in pencil to achieve the correct symmetry. Then fill in with liquid eyeliner.

8. A gel based eyeliner like MAC Fluidline, and a thin tapered brush are easier to control than traditional liquid eyeliner.

9. The tapered brush can be laid flat on it’s side and pulled across the lash line.

10. A felt tip pen eyeliner is easy to use, and more convenient than having a liner and a brush. Try Armani Maestro Liquid Eyeliner

Makeup Artist: Topolino

January 7th, 2010

Topolino is Italian for Mickey Mouse, and the name of one of the most extraordinary make up artists I’ve ever met. Hailing from Paris France, Topolino has been in the industry for over 27 years. He’s very petite, smokes like a chimney, and has the tiniest kit ever, basically the size of a handkerchief. His work spans from designing looks for shows like Frankie Morello in Milan, and ad campaigns for Thierry Mugler in Paris. What I find most fascinating about Topolino are the quirky characters that he creates like those above. These pictures were taken a few years ago at a master class in New York. The “chesire cat” smile is one of his standard designs. Using just a few basic products he works with such precision to create perfectly defined lines, and matte skin.

In his heavy french accent, he shared minimal information to the slew of questions that everyone in attendance bombarded him with. He favours primary colours, black white and sometimes silver. Doesn’t care what brand the tools and products he uses are, with the exception of Vaseline-it must be American. The consistency is better for glitter adhesion. To achieve the glitter princess Topolino rubbed Vaseline all over her face, neck and chest. Then poured large particle glitter into his hands and blew! As you can see the results are amazing. Topolino is a true artist.

Celebrities at Premieres

Celebrity Premieres

Before the end of the year arrives a few big movies will hit the theatres just in time for the 2010 awards season. (Golden Globe nominations were this morning) Over the past week premieres and promotion have begun, where we’ve seen standard red carpet looks that work every time. Rachel McAdams and Gwen Stefani at the premiere of Sherlock Holmes, show off two different shades of red. Adding further evidence to the fact that, there is a red lipstick that works for everyone. Penelope Cruz at the Nine premiere, and Zoe Saldana at Avatar, left their hair down, and focused on dark smoky eyes and neutral and matte lips.

Lady Luxe

November 4th, 2009

Screen shot 2009-11-04 at 11.52.47 AM

Lady like sophistication hit the runways this season. Strong feminine shapes like the pencil skirt, sky high heels, and statement necklaces deserve a make up look that takes more than five minutes to apply. Start by brightening and perfecting skin with YSL Touche Eclat. Eyes can be smoky in colour and almond in shape. Or go for a light coloured shadow all over the eyes, and define the lash line with a strong winged out liquid eyeliner using Armani’s Maestro Eyeliner. No lady like look is complete without a classic red lip easily achieved with Chanel Lipstick in Lover. Revlon’s All Fired Up nail enamel finishes the luxe look.
