How to: Prevent Red Lips From Bleeding

November 11th, 2011

When it comes to statement lipstick for AW/11, you have to wear red. However, keeping it looking perfect without bleeding can be a challenge for some. I recommend starting with a Lip primer especially along the edges of the lips. Primers often help prevent your lipstick from feathering into any little creases around the lips. Line your lips with a pencil this can also really help. Applying lipstick with a lip brush puts on less, making it less likely to move. If you are using lipgloss to finish, keep it away from the edges.

With these tips in mind you should have gorgeous looking red lips that stay put.

MTV EMA’s 2011

November 7th, 2011

This weekends EMA’s were hosted by the very cute Selena Gomez who looked adorable on the red carpet. Models Irina Shayk, and Bar Refaeli looked gorgeous with their hair swept off their faces flaunting glowy skin, nude lips, and smoky liner. Hayden Panettiere wore a similar look, though I wasn’t keen on her tight curly hair. Jessie J’s red lips and defined black liner was a winning combination with her gold leopard print dress.

Crimson Lips

October 7th, 2011

The scarlet lip is an absolute must have in your makeup bag for autumn. Texture is important to nail the trend, so go for a matte or velvet like finish. Wear it with bare eyes and spider lashes for a runway to real way make up look.

Top 6 Fall Makeup Trends

August 26th, 2011

As the summer season starts to wrap up, here are the most important makeup trends for fall 2011.

1. Black eyeliner–we have mentioned this before as a transitional look going into fall. Straight lines in all different designs ruled the runways from New York to Paris. So get your liquid liner ready you are going to need it.

2. Flushed Cheeks–flawless skin is always a must, and for fall we keep seeing a slightly flushed cheek along with that. The placement varies from high on the cheekbone to low, and not so much on the apples.

3. Spider Lashes–Pile on the mascara to maximize your lashes. This is not about separating each individual lash, it’s about a majorly clumpy look.

4. Metallic Eyes–Copper, gold, silver, bronze are all key players for eye shadow.

5. Big brows–Strong, defined, dark that is how I would describe the brow for fall.

6. Crimson lips–It wouldn’t be fall without a red lip. Semi matte and matte textures tend to be the texture for the season.

Fall 2011 Campaigns

August 11th, 2011

These are some of the hottest fall campaigns. I’m loving the makeup–tons of sculpting, pulled out eye shadow shapes, and  strong ruby lips, full on brows or no brows, now these are the things autumn is made of.

Couture Collections: Alexandre Vauthier FW11

Alexandre Vauthier’s couture show was so amazing. Everything from the velvet red lips, and Robert Palmer girl hair, to the strong silhouettes of the red-hot clothes. Absolutely fabulous.

Tip of the Day: Shiny Eyelids

June 9th, 2011

I love the look of shiny eyelids. It’s such a simple, yet highly effective way to makeup your eyes. Depending on how reflective you want your lids to look, use a salve like Eight Hour Cream, or for a high shine I use lip gloss.

Neither product requires a large amount to get the look. Using your ring finger tap a small amount of product onto bare eyelids. Remember it’s gloss–don’t expect it to stay put and not crease, but it’s all part of the look.

VS Angels at the CFDA’s

June 7th, 2011

These Victoria’s Secret models ditched their wings for gowns, at the Council of Fashion Designers of America awards last night. Alessandra’s red dress and matching red lip looked very glam. Doutzen, also in red worked the smoky eye and nude lip. I was not a huge fan of Karolina’s emerald green, hooded sequin dress. Fortunately her makeup and hair was subtle enough so the entire look was not a complete disaster. I think Miranda Kerr wearing black Michael Kors, and simple hair and makeup was the best dressed of the four.

What do you think?

MTV Movie Awards

June 6th, 2011

4 of the best looks from last nights MTV Movie awards were Leighton in Balmain with two-tone wavy hair. Blake in her blue body-con Michael Kors dress and sleek ponytail. Hailee Steinfeld looked more on trend than I’ve ever seen her at an awards show before. Her centre part and red lip looked so good on her. Rosie always looks beautiful with her signature pouty lips, and Dolce and Gabbana you really can’t go wrong.

Red Hot

February 8th, 2011

Red lips have been a staple for some seasons now and is a trend that is still going strong for S/S 11. Not all of us can pull off red from head to toe like January Jones at the Globes, but adding a little splash of red on your lips, nails or accessories can really make an outfit. Plus I love that its an easy way to go from a day look to a night look.

There are many shades of red and its actually a surprisingly easy colour to pull off. So ladies, don’t be so scared. And if you’re in the market for a great lipliner, try the Lancome Le Lipstique — it’s one of my faves. It’s super creamy and stays on really well without bleeding. And I love the brush on the end so you can smooth in the lipliner. Tres convenient.

Fendi Pre-Fall 2011

January 7th, 2011

Fendi’s Pre-Fall showcase looks are beautiful. Love the shades of blue used and the relaxed but still glamorous shapes, which are completely wearable. The strong matte red lip with the side swept ponytail is adorable.

The Ladies of Mad Men

October 20th, 2010

The season finale of Mad Men may have been this week, but the perfectly put together, lady like style of the era is still going strong for Fall 2010. A cinched in waist and a structured handbag goes really well with natural matte skin, red lips and well groomed brows.

Lip Stain

October 19th, 2010

The stained lip is a not only a modern take on the dark lip, but for many it’s an easier way to wear the trend. There are a few ways to achieve this new dark lip here are some key tips:

1. Use a lip primer or a bit of lip balm to prep the lips.

2. Press the colour into your lips with your fingers rather than directly from the lipstick tube. You can use a pencil to touch up the cupids bow.

3. Blot with a tissue in between applications of lipstick, and brush on a bit of loose powder to seal the colour in.

4. For a stain with a sheen apply lipstick first then blend the colour out with lip balm.

5. For the deep dark berry look of Dior, start in the centre of the lips with the lipstick and brush out towards the edges. The intensity will be be in the centre and the edges are left kind of imperfect

Front Row at NY Fashion Week

September 21st, 2010

Looking good in the front row-there were lots of celeb sightings this season at NYFW. Real fashionistas like Sarah Jessica Parker (who was in London yesterday to attend McQueen’s memorial service) and Rachel Bilson, to reality TV’s favourite family- Kim and Kourtney Kardashian. Although dressed in Spring 2011 make up looks were decidedly from this season. Jessica Szohr’s berry stained lips and the Kardashian girls cashmere looking skin, Christina Hendricks, and Rachel Bilson’s red mouths are must-have FW10 looks.

Emmy’s 2010

August 30th, 2010

Emmy’s last night were quite entertaining thanks to the hosting skills of Jimmy Fallon. The looks from the red carpet were pretty standard with the exception of a couple of unusual choices. January Jones got mixed reviews on her blue Atelier Versace and seemingly undone hair. I actually liked her hair and makeup for that reason. Her eyeliner was good, her skin looked glowy and the pink lips were pretty. The dress was perhaps not the best choice, but at least she didn’t look like anyone else. I liked Lea Michele’s pale grey shadow, and statement necklace. Jewel has never been on my radar but she looked beautiful last night in red lips and chignon. The song she sang was equally beautiful. Kim looked quite ethereal in white Marchesa. Her hair and makeup was really pretty and quite soft which suited the dress perfectly. Claire Danes I thought, was one of the best dressed overall of the night. Her dress was gorgeous Armani Prive. The colour and texture looked amazing against her tan skin, and blonde hair, and metallic eyeshadow pulled the whole together.

Fall Makeup Trends

August 20th, 2010

The make up for Fall is anything but simple this season. We’re gearing up for glamorous looks that aren’t over done. Fall’s old faithful standbys like the smoky eye and the red lip have a fresh feel to them-it’s a modern type of glamour for Fall 2010.

1. Graphic Eyes

If you don’t own black eye kohl or liquid liner now is the time to get it. This trend is harder edged than we saw last season. The shapes are defined and deliberate, but at the same time can be toned down for real life without losing the feel.

2. All Shades of Red

Of course there are red lips this season! What we noticed is that there are a variety of shades from brights to deep darks. A lipliner and lip brush are a must to replicate these perfect pouts.

3. Luxurious Skin

As far as I’m concerned it’s always all about the skin. To create the perfect canvas prep is the key. Don’t skimp on skincare. The end result should be like cashmere, soft, smooth. Not overly matte or dewy the perfect in-between.

4. Wrap Around Shadow

You have to wrap your shadow around your eyes. Apply all over the eyelid and continue underneath. You don’t have to use a dark colour to recreate this more up to date way of shading the eyes.

Stay tuned for more in depth “how to’s” on how to take these runway looks to real way…

Lea Michele

August 17th, 2010

Lea Michele looks super hot in these images from marktbeauty.com. As a make up artist skin is my favourite feature. These pictures attest to the fact that you should never under estimate the importance of glowing skin.

P.S I can’t wait for Glee to return this Fall!

Love Magazine

August 16th, 2010

I didn’t even recognize Alessandra! This is an absolutely fabulous image, another of LOVE magazine’s collectible September issues. The lips, the contouring, and of course the non brow-it’s so good. I can’t wait for the other 6 covers.

Love Magazine

August 4th, 2010

The September issue of British magazine Love is beyond gorgeous! What’s even better is that Rosie Huntington-Whitely is just the first of 7 collectible covers that will feature some of the industry’s top models. The only annoying thing is that Love is a bi-annual British magazine, and I’ve not managed to find it ever in Vancouver. So if you’re from Vancouver, and you know where we can get our hands on it, let us know because I’ve got a feeling we’re going to want all 7 covers.

Angelina Jolie Salt Premiere

July 26th, 2010

Angelina Jolie looks pretty stunning as she makes her way around the world for her latest movie Salt. Her make up is clean and classic opting for black eyeliner, and either nude or red on her most famous feature-lips. My favourite look so far is the glossy highlight on the cheeks, and the sheen on her legs. You can’t go wrong with strategically placed highlights.
